Summary of Unions
on the 1942 Map:

  1. * The United States of America (USA):
    • USA
    • Canada
    • all Central American and Carribean states
    • most Atlantic islands (including Greenland and Iceland)
    • most Pacific islands, Taiwan, Hainan, the Philippines and several now Indonesian islands, including Sulawesi.
    • Hainan island (then and now part of China) was to become a U.S. Peace Outpost
    • This was to be the dominant power in the world, military and otherwise.

  2. * The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR):
  3.    The Soviets were to be rewarded with:

    • Persia (Iran)
    • Mongolia
    • half of Manchuria was to be given to the Soviets [As for the part of Manchuria becoming part of Russia, remember that for a while it was a wholly-owned slab of Japan. Russia HAD to be given something, seeing as they had a border with Manchuko at the time and also had a railroad going THROUGH the provence.]
    • Finland
    • all of Eastern Europe which subsequently would form part of the Eastern Bloc (excluding Albania, but including the real-life maverick state of Yugoslavia, socialist but anti-Soviet). All of theses states were simply to become member-states of the USSR.  [Very ambitious and hopeful, seeing that in 1942 only the Russians would have had a clue as to the weakness of the Germans and would still have had to drive them off their land first.]
    • Austria, although ‘quarantined’ is shown within the Soviet sphere.
    • most of Germany, although ‘quarantined’ is shown within the Soviet sphere.
  4. The United States of South America (USSA): including:
    • all South American states,
    • the three Guianas as a single constituent state
    • the Falkland Islands.
    • *The Union of African Republics (UAR): All of Africa as a federation of republics.
  5. * The Arabian Federated Republics (AFR): including:
    • Saudi
    • and all other states now occupying the Arabian Peninsula
    • plus present-day Iraq
    • plus present-day Syria.
  6. * The Federated Republics of India (FRI):
    •  Present-day Afghanistan
    • Pakistan
    • India
    • Nepal
    • Bhutan
    • Bangladesh
    • Birma (Myanmar).
  7. The United Republics of China (URC): A federation including:
    • all parts of present-day China
    • Korea
    • the erstwhile French colony of Indochina (now Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia)
    • Thailand and Malaya.
  8. * The United States of Scandinavia (USS):
    • Norway
    • Sweden
    • Denmark.
  9. The United States of Europe (USE):
    • the Benelux countries
    • the German Rhineland
    • France
    • Switzerland
    • Spain
    • Portugal
    • and Italy.
  10. And finally the British Commonwealth of Nations (BCN), including:
    • Great Britain
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • Sri Lanka
    • Madagascar
    • most of Indonesia
    • parts of the formerly Dutch East Indies
    • Ceylon
    • Madagascar

[The British Commonwealth is the only other power allowed to keep peace-security outposts: the red triangles across Africa, allowing the British isles a link to the former colonies it is allowed to keep: Australia, New Zealand, parts of the formerly Dutch East Indies, and Ceylon and Madagascar.]

Commenter:  “Mr. Gomberg must have anticipated global warming and rising sea levels because Baffin Island has become The Baffin Islands ”

Commenter:  “Wow, that’s fascism at its highest point. It’s really disturbing.”

Commenter:  “Oh look, Wales has also become part of England. Helsinki has somehow moved from the south coast of Finland to the west. And Oslo has moved a long way inland. I’m sure there’s many more mistakes like this.”

Commenter:  “The New World Order (world government, ruled by a dictator) is one of “British values?” Is this a revitalization of the Soviet Union, of the old British empire, or a fusion of both? / Ha, just have the “Soviet Union” annex a few more countries to the west, and you have the “European Union!” This was former president Gorbachev’s dream…..”

Commenter:  “@lurker #24: Keep in mind this was 1942, the cartographer didn’t have a way of knowing what individual states would come out of French West Africa in 20 years time, he is making the map based on what he knows from his experiences living in 1942.

(There’s lots of these states and state borders that would look weird from the perspective of 2008, but in 1942 are quite normal, like the Bolivia/Paraguay and Ecuador/Peru borders (of course, someone in 2008 would wonder why they don’t just make them to match the “real” border), the “joining of Zimbabwe and Zambia” (”wouldn’t it make more sense to divide them at the river?”) and the western border of Sudan, and the states in what is now Saudi Arabia, as well as “rump Pakistan”.

I also find it interesting how the “real” USSR appears on this map. Most of the other independent states in our world that are part of the USSR on this map (Poland, Yugoslavia, Mongolia, Finland, etc.) are SSRs, like the union republics of the “real” USSR. However, Russia seems to have been divided into many ASSRs and, curiouser still, the SSRs that are now the Central Asian Republics (Kazakhstan and the other -stans) are ASSRs whereas they’ve been SSRs since the mid 30s. (The fracturing of the RSFSR sounds somewhat like the national delimitation program, Stalin would’ve loved this map.

Commenter:  “I found this map amazing! It has a bigger Greece than modern Greece!”

Commenter:  “What’s the linear feature running through Burma and southern China?”

Commenter:  “The only difference between that map and real trends is that the PRC will end up controlling Siberian Russia to central Kazakstan and down to SE Asia.
