Leslie Howard Says It Is Obvious That This Dominion
Is General Headquarters of Great British Commonwealth in Liaison
With the United States.
LONDON, Nov. 4 — (CP.) — Canada may become the federated capital of a new world order, Leslie Howard, noted British stage and screen actor, said tonight when he spoke on the British Broadcasting Corporation’s “Britain Speaks” feature.
“It is obvious that Canada is the general headquarters of the Great British Commonwealth, in liaison with the United States,” Howard said. “If a greater unity were forged she might be even the federated capital of a new world order — but not a Teutonic one.”
Howard was referring to German plans for a new Teutonic world order, which was being opposed by the British Commonwealth of Nations.
“Canada is a land of promise which is only now being revealed,” Howard said, “and the best is yet to come.”
“It was sad to think of the struggle between two great peoples, the French and the English, in the early history of Canada,” he said, “but now the monument to Wolfe and Montcalm at Quebec is a symbol of unity between them.”
Howard said Canadian troops in Britain were welcomed everywhere, and told of paying visits to an Ontario artillery regiment somewhere in England. In return, he said, many of the men visited his house.
“They are a good natured, smiling crew,” he said, “but when equipped with their splendid new guns they make a formidable company.”
Speaking of the Empress of Britain, destroyed recently by enemy action, he expressed hope she would be replaced.
“Surely Canada will re-create for her a daughter, perhaps even more beautiful than the mother,” he said.
